Dear Parents and Students,
An alert appears on some of the students’ weekly Reading Counts reports – “Student has not passed at least 3 quizzes above student’s Lexile Level.”
Although the Lexile may be used by students in choosing books, we are not asking students to select books according to Lexile. Rather we do expect students to select books on or above grade level. However, the following information may prove helpful:
Students in 2nd--5th grades took the Scholastic Reading Inventory test at the beginning of the school year which scored a Lexile for each student's comprehension. The SRI Lexile serves as a point of reference for their teachers.
The Lexile Scale from 200L to 1700L, provides a context for understanding reading comprehension. This scale can be used to match readers to text that are about at the reader's level. While there is not one set level of expected comprehension, the Lexile Framework targets readers to text where the reader is expected to have 75-percent comprehension. At the same time, the reader, teachers, parents and others can moderate this level by adjusting the relationship between the reader and text.
As a point of interest, the online Reading Counts lists indicate Lexiles for most books in the last column. Again, we do not at this time expect students to choose books according to Lexile.
Sincerely yours,
Arlene McDace
